Mommies: what are we eating?

The title begs a question that has but one universal answer. Whatever the heck we want. Whatever makes us comfortable, happy, and is filling. Moms need to eat. We need to eat in order to care for our babies. And with what little free time we have, those options are sometimes limited. So eat what makes you smile, what makes your tummy feel comforted, and what gives you energy. Also anything efficient. Frozen burritos are a mainstay in our household.

Sometimes for me, mommy food means super boring healthy food. A go to for me is microwaving a bowl of baby kale, bone broth, and rotisserie chicken. It tastes like hospital food but it goes down so easy, is comforting, and I know it has a lot of nutritional value with protein, collagen, and the kale is packed with vitamins.

But tonight, it is past midnight, I just watched the latest episode of Euphoria and gave my little boy a bath. I instantly put him in fleece jammies and wrapped him in a soft blanket. He is passed out for at least an hour. I made myself a childhood favorite. A turkey sandwich with doritos.

I wanted something comforting and kind of not healthy, but also not unhealthy. The turkey and wheat bread offer protein, fiber, and some micro nutrients. The doritos are just pure sin but the price is worth my happiness. Duke’s mayonnaise is the only acceptable mayo brand in our household and I only eat spicy mustard.

Earlier today this is what I ate. It was a bit chaotic, but I made it work for me.

7am: Nature Valley cranberry granola bar and coffee while I fed Beau his breakfast

9am – a banana

11am – Mother’s milk tea (a tea that straight up tastes like licorice but is known to boost milk supply!)

1pm – Taco bell that my friend Jamie brought me. Had a chicken crunchwrap, half a bean burrito, and 2 spicy potato tacos. It was gorgeous. We also made SHIRLEY TEMPLES, probably the greatest drink ever conceived besides coffee.

6pm – kale, bone broth, and chicken. The boring and super healthy gut healing mama meal.

8pm – Brussel sprouts. My husband always buys them and never eats them, so I decided to put them in the oven with salt, pepper, and EVOO and I ate them up. Loved it!

9pm – Handful of raspberries!

and here we are, 12:30am. A turkey sandwich with chips. It’s like a hug from a childhood friend. And it will give me that little boost of energy I need to get through until about 2:45am when Beau has his final night time feeding and is ready to sleep in his bassinet next to me on the couch.
